attempting obscurity
I mess around with writing, but deep down I'm pretty sure I'll never actually get published because I treat it like a hobby and not a passion -- I write when I have time, instead of making time to write.
When I read, I prefer YA sci-fi/ fantasy as my go-to fiction reads. I tend toward this genre because I read fiction as an escape from the daily drudge of life. YA sci/fi-fantasy usually has more upbeat/ hopeful endings, while adult fiction of any genre (except romance) tends to have more depressingly realistic endings. Sometimes I read romance novels, but I really prefer the type with plot/ character development between sex scenes, and I don't like having to hunt for them.
In non-fiction, I prefer history, biographies, psychology, gender studies, social/applied sciences, and law/ public policy.

Rite of Passage
I really liked it. A friend of mine lent it to me, his dad wrote it, and I was really impressed with this one. I have to admit, I was concerned I wouldn't because I'm a little picky about my sci-fi and fantasy. But this was a really cool book -- good pacing, good plot, and well-written characterization. Normally I dislike the first-person pov, but it works well here. I also like the hints of the untold stories -- the people on the worlds, and the way we see glimpses of these fully integrated, growing, incredible societies -- but only touches and glimpses. It's really fascinating. I want to read more, about what happens after with Mia and Jimmy, and about lives on the various worlds, and lives on different ships. I find myself simultaneously incredibly delighted with this book and incredibly disappointed that it's a one-off.
